Funding Opportunities

APEM are dedicated to furthering the cause of Paeds Emergency Medicine at all stages of training. We are delighted to offer 3 different types of bursaries:

  • Medical student elective bursaries (to support PEM-related medical electives)

  • Oral conference presentation bursaries (to cover conference fees)

  • QIP/research bursaries (to support PEM-related projects undertaken by APEM members)

All applications can be made through the following form:

https://forms.gle/etHdaAmn9t1Tubqa7

  1. Medical student elective bursaries

We are delighted to offer up to four elective bursaries per calendar year to a maximum value of £500 each towards the cost of medical student electives.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants will be studying in their final or penultimate year at a UK medical school.

  • Applicants will be undertaking a formal elective approved by their University (and be able to submit proof of this from their university on request)

  • Applicants will be undertaking an elective placement with a direct link to Paediatric Emergency medicine (this does not have to be in a dedicated PEM environment, but should involve seeing acute and undifferentiated paediatric presentations or undertaking appropriate research activities linked with PEM)

  • Applicants will agree to submitting their final project to APEM for possible presentation at an APEM conference session on their return.

  • Applicants will not be receiving financial support for their elective from any other bursary to a value of more than £250

  • There is no geographic limitation regarding elective placements

Application process:

  • Applicants will be asked to confirm their eligibility and answer simple white-space questions regarding the motivation for their elective placement and the expected benefits from a Paediatric Emergency perspective

  • Applications will be collated and reviewed twice per year in April and October. In exceptional circumstances applications may be reviewed ad-hoc where shorter time-lines are required – please let us know at the point of application if you have a hard deadline outside of these times.

  • Students will be notified mid April/October regarding the outcome of their application.

  1. Oral presentation conference fee bursary

We realise that conference fees can be expensive, but we want to make sure that those presenting their great work at our events can access financial support to do so.

Eligibility:

  • Recipients will be resident doctors (pre CCT) or any allied health professionals (including ENPs, ACPs, paramedics and the wider MDT).

  • Bursaries are offered for one speaker for each oral presentation at an APEM session

  • The bursary will cover the cost of a single day of the conference

  • Sorry we are not able to cover travel or accommodation expenses for oral presentations

  • Applicants will not have other sources of funding for this conference – please do investigate whether your study budget will cover these fees, or whether other bursaries are available to you from other sources.

Process:

  • Please fill in the general application form https://forms.gle/etHdaAmn9t1Tubqa7

  • We aim to review applications in the 8 weeks before conference presentations

  • If agreed, the bursary will be paid in the 2 weeks after the conference presentation has taken place.

  1. QIP or Research bursaries

We’re excited about supporting quality improvement and research activities undertaken by APEM members.

Eligibility criteria

  • Recipients will be APEM members

  • Maximum funding would be up to £2000 per project, although we would expect most grants to be less than this to allow us to support more individual projects.

  • Projects should demonstrate relevance to the wider PEM community. This may be on a national/regional level or may be able to demonstrate translational aspects with PEM throughout the UK.

  • Recipients would be expected to report back regularly regarding the progress and impacts of their projects and consider presentation at an APEM conference session

  • Recipients should confirm that they are not in receipt of other funding for this project.

Process:

  • Applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

  • Applications will routinely be reviewed in April and October each year. If decisions are needed in advance of this, applicants are welcome to email the committee.

  • Please fill in the general application form https://forms.gle/etHdaAmn9t1Tubqa7
